Library Cards: Library cards are available for RCC students, faculty, staff and adult members of the community who are 18 years of age or older.  When applying for a library card, you must fill out an application form and present a photo ID. Curriculum students are required to have a College ID which library staff can activate for use as your library card.

You may not use your public library card to check out materials in the RCC Library.  Our automated systems are not compatible.  You may, however, be eligible to apply for an RCC Library card.  The same is true of other college library cards with the exception of North Carolina Community College libraries who are members of the CCLINC consortium.  If your library card is from one of these community college libraries, you may use your card at the RCC Library.  Please remember that even though you may not be able to use your public/college library card at RCC, you may use the interlibrary loan service at your local library to request RCC’s Library materials.

Find Books: Search iLink, our online Library catalog to determine if we have the material(s) you need.

Interlibrary Loan: When searching our online catalog, you can choose to search 46 other North Carolina community college libraries who participate in the CCLINC consortium.  If you find the material at another community college, you can place a hold and have the material mailed to the RCC Library for you to use.  If you are unable to locate the material needed in our online catalog, you can request it through interlibrary loan.  Library staff will borrow the material, and you can pick it up at the RCC Library.  There is no charge for most interlibrary loans. See instructions for requesting books from other libraries.

Renewals: You can renew any material by bringing it to the Circulation Desk in the library.  As long as no one else has requested the material, library staff will renew it for you.  You may also renew the material on our online catalog as long as it is not overdue and no one else has requested the material.

Find Articles Search for articles from magazines, journals and newspapers. Plus eBooks, poetry, maps, literary tools and more in our online databases.

Scholarly Materials:

  • A scholarly periodical (sometimes referred to as peer-reviewed journal or a refereed journal) publishes the results of original and significant research in a particular discipline. For most academic papers, scholarly articles are excellent and preferred sources for supporting your arguments. Examples of scholarly journals:
    • Dermatology Nursing
    • Sex Roles: A Journal of Research
    • The Southern Literary Journal
    • The Western Journal of Medicine
  • A popular periodical (a magazine, newsmagazine, or newspaper) publishes shorter pieces, news items, descriptions or summaries of research findings (but not the original research papers themselves), and/or information of interest to non-specialists or the general public. Examples of popular periodicals:
    • Cosmopolitan
    • Glamour
    • Newsweek
    • U.S. News & World Report

How do I cite journal articles?
Use these Citation Style Samples approved by the RCC English Department:

Samples of APA Style
Samples of MLA Style

Periodicals: We do not check out single issues of periodicals.  A few exceptions are made for special circumstances.

Periodicals Interlibrary Loan: If you are unable to locate an article in the RCC Library, you can request it through interlibrary loan.  Library staff will borrow the article, and you can pick it up at the RCC Library.  While the RCC Library does not charge for interlibrary loan services, you may be responsible for charges from the lending library.

Online Databases Password: All online databases are available only to current RCC students, faculty, and staff. Please contact us to obtain a password to access these resources off campus.

Type Papers: Visit the LRC Computer Lab, located in the library, to type your papers. Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint, is available on the twenty-eight computers located in the lab.  The lab is available to students, faculty, staff and adult community patrons and a lab assistant is available to answer your technology questions.

E-mail: You may access your e-mail account on any of the 19 computers in the Library. If you need assistance creating an e-mail account, we can help!

Make copies: We have a photocopier in the library. The cost is 10 cents per page.

Computer printouts: Black & white printouts cost 5 cents per page; color copies cost 10 cents per page. Please note that the Library does not receive any portion of student technology fees to purchase our printing supplies. To help with students' printing costs, Curriculum students may register for a copy card loaded with $3.00 of free printing each semester at the Circulation Desk in the library. A valid College ID card is required.
